Multi-County Police Pursuit Ended With Santa Cruz Crash

Police pursuit ends after the suspect’s vehicle crashed near a prison building in Santa Cruz on Saturday, October 24th. San Jose California Highway Patrol (CHP) initially pursued the suspect, a San Jose male of unknown age, for a DUI charge alongside other felonies. However, the suspect managed to flee to Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz CHP and Santa Cruz Police Department then continued chasing the suspect, who was driving a Toyota Prius. The chase in Santa Cruz started from Highway 17 and ended at Ocean Street. While trying to evade the police, the suspect ended up striking a utility pole with his Prius. He was arrested shortly after.

What Can You Do if Your Private Property Was Damaged During Police Pursuit?

Research done in several states has found that police-chase related incidents cause up to 40% property damage, which includes civilian-owned properties. Thus, if you’re looking to see whether you can hold these law enforcement officials responsible for damages that occur to your property, then you should know that you can do so. However, you cannot directly file a claim against the person responsible. You should be filing your damage claim against their employer, which can be the state, local, or federal government.
